The Early Years
I answer to many things; therapist, counselor, guide, advisor, helper but what I like to think of myself is, that I am a person who loves to invite others to bring themselves to a part of my world, a part that offers them an opportunity to help take a look at who they really are and to discover what they really want and to set about making it so. Ah, but I am a bit ahead of myself…
The roots germinated in a middle class family in Dallas Texas, a family that was church-going and these churches could inspire a serious-minded boy to want to be a minister and he could later become more and more attracted to one of a minister’s important jobs, pastoral counseling. As time and self-awareness grew apace it was possible that this boy/young man wanted to focus more and more on the counseling aspect only, to the exclusion of the other roles of a minister. Yes, that boy is I and I don’t really think I ever seriously considered any other profession and so I arrive at this time realizing my boyhood dream, “helping people” did come true. I do now what I always really wanted to do. I am fortunate.
My love of working with adolescents and their families I came by honestly as my adolescence was often stormy and full of parental struggles and much confusion and sadness on my part. No, I didn’t have a dramatic epiphany like, “I must save others from what I went through” but I think my experiences gave me a certain energy that I have directed toward my clients. There is something very special about sitting with teens and parents and teaching them what I know now but didn’t way back in my family.
I have been in private practice for almost 21 years now and before that I worked for several mental health centers in various capacities. I hold a Masters in Social Work and am currently a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in the state of Washington. Since I was a Corpsman in the Navy, I have worked in and loved the medical field. I have worked on medical units, emergency rooms, and clinics. In 1976 I got an opportunity to work on a psychiatric unit, which fit right in, to my plans. This job led me to graduate school in Social Work and really made it possible to step into my role as a counselor and therapist.
I am passionate about the change process and my great pleasure is helping adolescents and parents as well as couples, families, stepfamilies and children of all ages make the changes they really want. I believe each of my clients deserves a specialized approach unique to their individual needs. Therapy is a process whereby we co-create a treatment approach that is just right for you. I am not locked into any particular treatment modality, but rather, I am skilled in a variety of therapeutic methods.
Some of my specialized training includes working with adolescents, blended and step families, Play Therapy for children, Interactive Guided Imagery, Energy Psychology, and Gottman approaches for couples. Including my time in private practice, I have been a psychotherapist for 33 years.
I would love to see if we could work together!

When I am not sitting down with people in my office I can be found sailing the San Juan’s and the Gulf Islands in my beloved Pacific Northwest cruising grounds or in my kitchen where cooking is a passion and hobby. While one could easily point out that my creative energies can be applied in helping my clients move from where they are to where they want to be, I like to expand my creativity to include assembling raw ingredients into something soul satisfying for myself and my companions.
